anyone watched Harlan County, USA?

has anyone watched this? it is on Netlfix so I'm going to watch one day when I have time.

It's great. I've seen it several times. Retroplex on Comcast showed it a few times last year and I got to see it again.

At the first , there is a guy crawling along setting timbers- that is a Wilcox miner section. That machine didn't use roof support much and will clear 20 inches. If the coal gets to 44-48 inches, it is completely out of it's element. The life of a left side jack setter is about 7 years, by then you had 2nd or 3rd stage blacklung. Finally , the laws made those type miners adhere to the same roof control plan as a Joy or Jeffery miner and made them to expensive to use.

i had been dabbling with the idea of watching it on there, guess ill go ahead and check it out now.

There's a lot of interesting stuff in that film. The way the white and black folks got along in a small KY town in 1977, the way the local sheriff was caught on tape taking shots at and trying to run over in a vehicle unarmed non violent striking miners and the film makers and seeing nothing be done to him, the way the women did most of the leg work, took most of the beatings, and spent more time in jails while husbands sat at home and did nothing. It's a great watch and if I'm not mistaken it won the Oscar that year for Best Documentary. The songs in the movie will get in your head and never leave. I remember hearing those same songs when I was a kid on the picket line with my dad at McClure 1.

Lung I thought it was a mine thug that shot at the folks. The sheriff just kinda didn't want to get involved. The guys where on the picket line.
